Was Spacetime a Glorious Historical Accident?

Julian Barbour

Exactly half a century after Minkowski’s justly famous lecture, Dirac’s efforts to quantize gravity led him “to doubt how fundamental the four-dimensional requirement in physics is”. Dirac does not appear to have explored this doubt further, but I shall argue that it needs to be considered seriously. The fact is that Einstein and Minkowski fused space and time into a four-dimensional continuum but never directly posed the two most fundamental questions in dynamics: What is time? What is motion? It was an historical accident that Einstein attempted to implement Mach’s principle after he had created special relativity; otherwise he would have been forced to address these questions, which have never been properly considered. I shall show how they can be answered and suggest that: 1) time and space are utterly different; 2) the dynamical law of the universe may define absolute simultaneity in a manner that is still consistent with local validity of Minkowski’s marvellous notion of spacetime.

This is Julian Barbour presenting his beautiful theory at the Perimeter Institute.
It is a flash file so you should have the latest Flash version in your computer to be able to watch it.

String theory is finally gone!

After being sick and tired by the fuzz on the String Theory, I finally found a book that has made my mind to come back to calm waters again. After years and years of discomfort with the completely crazy status of present particle physics, which was mostly dictated by the String theory prevalence of nowadays.
The book is amongst the best I ever read and its title is:
Not Even Wrong by Peter Woit. If you have any interest on the present status of theoretical physics you might have an agreeable surprise when having a look at his blog.

Trouble with Physics

Lee Smolin, has open my eyes to a problem that was bothering me for years. Why physics is becoming so far away from reality? Why are we (again) becoming Platonists looking for an ideal universe, mathematically perfect and absolutely impossible to measure or probe? How can scientists state things such as dark matter, or dark energy that are purely imagination and maths as "real things if they have no proof whatsoever? How they dare state that the Universe has a beginning in time if there is no proof about it? How science became so corrupt to avoid to mention those things are pure theories, unproven theories? And finally, why science allowed models to be taken as reality (in climate change or global warming issues) if not for pure degradation and greed? This guy is really brilliant! I strongly recommend his books! Trouble with Physics

Most things I've wanted to spread around are here!

Today, I found this blog and it contains the gist of what I always wanted to make available for people with a minimum interest in science.
If you feel you have "some" interest in things like quantum physics, relativity and cosmology, I believe you will be happily surprised.
Good trip!

First map of threats to marine ecosystems shows all the world's oceans are affected

First map of threats to marine ecosystems shows all the world's oceans are affected from PhysOrg.com

As vast and far-reaching as the world’s oceans are, every square kilometer is affected by human activities, according to a study in the journal Science by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and others.

More science and less opinion

Researchers link ice-age climate-change records to ocean salinity from PhysOrg.com

Sudden decreases in temperature over Greenland and tropical rainfall patterns during the last Ice Age have been linked for the first time to rapid changes in the salinity of the north Atlantic Ocean, according to research published Oct. 5, 2006, in the journal Nature. The results provide further evidence that ocean circulation and chemistry respond to changes in climate.

Manipulating light with a tiny needle

Manipulating light with a tiny needle from PhysOrg.com

Using the tip of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), it is possible to map the wave pattern of light, trapped in a so called optical resonator, with unprecedented precision. Apart from that, the AFM is also capable of playing with the light, to optimize the performance of the resonator.

A Brief Story about Everything

Hi there!

I started thinking about a reliable server where I could put all sorts of things that occur to me.
Things such as, thoughts, experiences, trips, nice views, books I read and recomend, recipies, movies, in sum, everything that is part of my life and I want to share with my friends.
I don't intend to be right or wrong, to guide or be guided but just express myself as a normal average human being.
For sure, I will not be able to avoid biased oppinions here as all my oppinion are biased by a guy called Jorge.
However, I don't take him too seiously, so I suggest you to take the trip lightly as a butterfly in a beautiful spring morning.
Take you time and, hopefully, enjoy the ride!
